About the design: Symbols of Oya
Oya is one of the most powerful Orishas. A Warrior-Queen, She is the wife of the God Shango, to whom she gave the power to create storms. Much of Oya's power is rooted in the natural world. She is the Goddess of thunder, lightning, tornadoes, winds, rainstorms and hurricanes.
She manifests as the water buffalo and is a fierce protector of women and capable of violent outbursts when fighting for justice. Despite her fiery side, Oya is immensely nurturing, and is also known as a mother of nine, with her offspring representing the tributaries of the Niger River in Africa. She has one foot in life and one in death - the only Orisha that is capable of crossing the life/death divide.
Her colours are purple, maroon red, orange and brown.
